Episode 68

Short Travel Experience Becomes Life Transition in Small Rural Town - Entrepreneur-writer Hannah Kirshner

Last year food-stylist author Hannah Kirshner gave us insights into her book on her experiences in a small rural town in Ishikawa- she learned how to make sake, grew organic rice, hunted for boar and wild ducks, made charcoal, turned wood into bowls, and worked at a stylish izakaya bar that started her incredible journey.

This time, Hannah joins us from New York to give us an update in 2022 on her projects and life in Yamanaka with a special focus on the Kitchen-Studio idea she has to convert an old house into a beautiful, community-building shared kitchen and business space for cooking lessons and pop-up restaurant collaboration opportunities.

Hannah Kirshner's book, WATER, WOOD & WILD THINGS shares deep Japan experiences from a small rural town making sake, learning local culture and traditions first hand. Our talk in 2021 was episode #194 when the book was first published: https://youtu.be/RLoqDyZY9-A

This first talk in 2021 is something that I often refer back to and make Japan connections from, so it was great to follow-up now that the paperback version is out and Hannah is building on her connections and experiences in Yamanaka town to now renovate an old home into a community-building project called "Kidori".

It will be great to catch up on how her experiences have developed and changed and what new insights she would add if she wrote the book now. I am also excited to learn how her book has been received by various audiences and her plans for the future.
