Episode 61

Rural Japan Culture, Writing, Art & Life - Rebecca Otowa

Rebecca Otowa is an inspiration to anyone who is deeply invested in a life and career in Japan. Here we talk about 3 of her published books and she reads some parts to us as well.

Talk VIDEO here.

Writers and artists like Rebecca are so important to give us important insights into the integrated experience as both an outsider and insider in Japanese culture, traditions, rural life, parenting, and so many complicated issues surrounding a long life in Japan.

Rebecca Otowa grew up in California and learned Japanese living in Australia, then came to Japan in 1978 and never left. Rebecca got an MA in Japanese Buddhism, married into a traditional family and raised two sons. She has had a long and interesting career, but her great loves are writing and drawing which she does so beautifully- uncovering deep layers of hidden Japanese cultural gems for her audiences.

Join us as Rebecca shares insights and stories from three of her most beloved books, The Mad Kyoto Shoe Swapper & Other Stories, My Awesome Japan Adventure, and At Home in Japan - a foreign woman's journey of discovery.
