Episode 52

Renovating a Regal House into a Guest Lodge and Cafe in Sasama Village

Dr.Shelley Clarke found a beautiful mountain community she would call home while cycling around the rural area of Shizuoka in Japan. Now Shelley is based in that small village deep in the mountains which has a population of only 70 people.

Shelley has created a guest lodge, cafe, and has restored the traditional garden in the 600 year old regal estate she bought for a bargain of 10 million yen ($100,000 USD). Shelley has been very active in welcoming the local community who were once shunned by the original owners of the estate. She collaborates with local women to run the cafe and is helping in many ways to revive the town and attract new residents and visitors. Watch the Video

Here we talk about the beautiful abandoned house that she bought and remodeled - this traditional house and garden was called Sasu-Ichi which she restored and renovated into a beautiful home, lodge and cafe. Shelley is an avid cyclist, is learning the koto (that she found in the house), and performs with a local Kagura troupe.

Dr.Shelley Clarke is a sustainable fisheries consultant working on projects with the UN. She is the founder of Sasama consulting. We will have her join a follow up talk to dive into her work with the United Nations and the issues of our common oceans.
