Foraging for Wild Foods Across Japan & Translating Stories Back Into Japanese - talking with author Winifred Bird

Foraging for food in forests, rivers and oceans is an important aspect of human survival throughout history and in Japan, there is still a use of and admiration of foraged foods as a part of the seasonal appeal of dishes. Watch the Video of this talk here on YouTube

Winifred Bird spent years researching and writing stories of people across Japan who are still engaged with SANSAI foraging as a part of their lifestyle or business. In this follow up talk, Winifred shares some insights from some of the interviews she has done since our last talk which has raised new questions as well as her recent collaboration with the translator working on the Japanese version of her book to be released this autumn.

In March of 2021 Winifred Bird joined the #SeekSustainableJapan to talk about her new book "Eating Wild Japan- tracking the culture of foraged foods with a guide to plants and recipes".

I have referred to this wonderful book in many talks, consulting opportunities and seminars- it is such a wonderful resource of information about the history and culture of foraging for food in Japan in the past and present.

In this talk, Winifred Bird will give us an update on how the translation of the book into Japanese has been over the last year as well as other insights and revelations from the book as we continue our conversation from last year.
